Men's Swimming Wins Sixth Straight CUNYAC Championship; Maczka Named MVP

BRONX, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2024) – The Baruch College Bearcats retained conference bragging rights for a sixth consecutive season, winning the 2024 CUNYAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship at Lehman's APEX Center.

The Bearcats dominated the weekend, accumulating 371 points over the three day meet, the most points scored at the championship since 2017. Baruch finished the weekend having won 16 gold medals.

Maczka turned in yet another strong performance on the day, setting another championship and conference record. He won gold in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.40, surpassing the previous championship best of 46.43 set by teammate Youssef Elkhouly last season and the conference standard of 45.88 set by Tim Sweeney in 2017. Maczka competed in seven events over the three-day meet, winning gold in each while setting a new championship standard in each. For his efforts, he was named the championship's Most Valuable Performer.

On the final day of competition, the Bearcats claimed three gold medals. In addition to Maczka's performance in the 100 free, Elkhouly captured gold in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:57.85, seven seconds faster than the second-place swimmer. Daniel Vasilkoff won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.04, 19 seconds quicker than the next participant. The time was also the second-fastest mark posted in championship history.

Lehman was the runner-up at the meet, totaling 173 points, highlighted by a gold-medal effort on the final day in the 400-yard freestyle relay. A team of Adam Bryn, Roger Sanchez, Brandon Coombs and Ronald Sanchez completed the race in 3:17.10.

Brooklyn finished third with 117 points, led by a pair of gold medal performances on the final day from Michael Kravets. He won the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:00.51, while winning the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:59.30.

The 2024 Metropolitan Conference Finals are scheduled for Feb. 16-18 at Rutgers University, followed by the ECAC Championship at the Naval Academy Mar. 1-3.
