Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Upsets #8 NYU in 5-Set Thriller (25-27, 25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 18-16)

The men's volleyball team recorded their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2015 by defeating the #8-ranked Violets of New York University in five sets on Thursday night in the ARC Arena.

Each set went down to the wire as the Bearcats totaled 15 blocks in the home win.

Two-time CUNYAC Championship MVP Jack Centeno came up big again tonight with 15 kills, while Peter Gavroff had 12 kills and Haoxin (Dennis) Hu nine to give rookie Head Coach Ezri Shor her first victory as the men's coach.

The match started on fire in the first set with the Bearcats hitting .520 and NYU .571, but both came back down to earth in the second set with the Bearcats hitting only .034 and NYU .133.

The two teams were evenly matched all evening and no surprise that it all came down to the final points as an NYU attack error and Centeno's final kill helped break a 16-16 tie for the victory. Big credit to Naoki Tani with an incredible dig to keep the play alive!

Ryan Ommenn dished out 36 assists in directing the attack all evening.

The visiting Violets, who made the short trip with a New York City measurement of three subway stops, struggled hitting .193 to fall to a 2-2 record.

Buddy Cohen was busy for them all night in the ARC Arena with 20 kills hitting .643 and Devyn Nguyen had 54 assists.

The Bearcats will hit the road tomorrow to Boston, Massachusetts to compete this weekend at the Fenway Classic jointly hosted by Emmanuel College and the Wentworth Institute of Technology.
