Down 2-0, Bearcats Rally to Defeat Rutgers-Newark in 5 Sets

The men's volleyball team recorded an impressive comeback victory on Saturday afternoon at Rutgers University-Newark in New Jersey.

The Bearcats started slow losing 25-17 and 25-19 but then went on a furious rally with scores of 30-28, 25-10, and 15-13 to pull out the exciting win in a re-match of the 2022 NCAA Tournament first round contest in Newark.

The host Scarlet Raiders had more kills (59 to 54) but the Bearcats were better hitting when it counted the most with .394 in the third set and .346 in the fourth.

The two teams were tied at 10-10 in the fifth set tie-breaker but Peter Gavroff later closed the door in the final two points with two kills for the 15-13 victory.

The non-conference matchup featured 33 ties and 16 lead changes. 

Gavroff led the attack with 13 kills, while New Jersey native Jack Centeno had 11 kills and five digs. Hoaxin Hu came up big again with 10 kills (.471) and five block assists.

Ryan Oommen was busy all afternoon with a career-high 46 assists and added two kills.

Lucas Blanco was tops for the home team from the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) with 14 kills.
